Together Responds: Rebuild 1000!
Katrina and Rita Homes to be Rebuilt
In
the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Rebuilding Together
has pledged to rebuild 1,000 hurricane-damaged Gulf houses.
To date, we have:
• Repaired and rebuilt 552 houses and nonprofit facilities
in the Gulf
• Engaged almost 16,000 volunteers who have donated over 378,000
hours for labor with a market value of more than $10 million,
doing
repairs with a total market value of over $30 million dollars*
To date, Rebuilding Together
has received a lead donation of $1.5 million from Countrywide Financial
Services, and additional support from AARP, The Avon Foundation,
BP America, Conoco Phillips, Fannie Mae, National Roofing Contractors
Association, Order of Malta, and Shell Oil.
Rebuilding Together has
also partnered with the Marriott New Orleans and the Plumbing Heating
and Cooling Contractors Association on the Rebuild 1000 project.
However,
there is much more to be done. RT Pasadena board member Kent Lee
spent five weeks in 2006-2008 rebuilding 14 New Orleans homes. "There
has been a great deal of progress made in many neighborhoods, but
very little rebuilding has been done in the 9th Ward where many
blocks have nothing but the shell of foundations," said Lee.
In 2009, Rebuilding Together is organizing one-week rebuilding efforts
in the Gulf in almost every month except July and August. If you
can spare a week of your time, and can pay for your airfare to the
Gulf, please sign up to help; it will forever change the lives of
homeowners you help, and you will never forget the experience.
Rebuilding Together requests each volunteer contribute funds to
for the logistical expenses of a Rebuild 1000 work week. The expenses
include housing, food, insurance, t-shirts, safety equipment and
daily transportation to and from the worksite.
These costs range between $150 and $250 per person per week, depending
on location. Volunteers may choose to use the housing options provided
by the host affiliate or may secure alternative accommodations for
the work week at their own expense. Acadiana and Calcasieu projects'
participation fee is $150, while New Orleans projects' fee is $250.
Arranging your own housing will add to your trip costs, as well
as create logistical challenges for transportation to-and-from the
work site.
