2005 Rebuilding Day

Rebuilding Together Pasadena tackled seven 2005 home remodeling projects on National Rebuilding Day Saturday, April 30 and May 7, mobilizing over 200 volunteers to improve the lives of homeowners in Altadena and Pasadena.

While statistically fewer than the number of homes RT Pasadena renovated in Spring 2004, several of the 2005 projects are bigger in scope than in years past - projects that will possibly take all year (and possibly into next year) to complete.RT was able to work on these projects because of generous support from house sponsors Countrywide Funding, The City of Pasadena Department of Water and Power, Fannie Mae, The Howrey Group, and Washington Mutual; the two Boy Scout troops who worked with us as part of Eagle Scout projects, supporters who made donations, occupation therapist helping with accessibility and mobility assessments, and all the volunteers who helped us do the work. RT thanks you all.

At just about every site, there was prep work for painting involved: masking off window frames and heaters, covering furniture and floors with tarps and dropcloths, removing debris, and applying primer to walls, followed by the actual painting.
RT Advisory Board member Marla Hollingsworth paints a masterpiece.Specific projects at each house provided evidence that Rebuilding Together's mission to corrected safety and accessibility problems for homeowners fulfills a big need in the community. Highlights of the work done include:

• Repairs were made and replacement drywall was installed to a home with rain damage
• roof repairs were made, an easy-turn kitchen faucet was installed and non-slip adhesive strips were added to exterior steps for arthritic and dimished-sighted homeowners
• a kitchen floor was removed and scraped clean for floor tile installation, a rainforest’s worth of vegetation was cleared from a backyard, and trash was removed to make a home safer for an owner with balance problems
• a kitchen was remodeled and a handicapped ramp was built for an elderly homeowner and
• trash and mold damage is being removed on an ongoing basis in a house with multi-floor rain damage in a long-term project that will allow the elderly homeowners to move out of assisted living and back into their own home.

This does not mean that every project at every site was completed; the scope of many tasks was more than could be done in 2 or 3 weekends, even with extensive weeklong help from AmeriCorps so RT committed to going back later this year on scheduled workdays to complete the projects started.
